Subconscious Triggers: Seeing Through Rose-Colored-Glasses

Subconscious Triggers and Rose Colored Glasses?

What do rose colored glasses have to do with subconscious triggers?

We’ve all heard the term “rose colored glasses.”  We use this phrase when a person chooses to see what they would rather see, instead of seeing the generally accepted “larger picture” of “reality”.  If we put on rose colored glasses and wear them often, we might end up outside the box we call society.  The term “reality,” however, brings up a much larger point.  If everyone were wearing rose colored glasses, would not that be the new “reality”?  The people outside the box of what we call society then would be those who did not wear the glasses.

The truth is we all have colored glasses.  They are colored by the experiences we have had, the people we have met, and the things we have seen.  Every person has their own unique color of glasses they use to filter their concept of the world.  No two people see the same image when they look upon the universe that surrounds them.

Subconscious Filing

Our glasses are actually synonymous with our subconscious, which filters and colors our world.  The subconscious mind is like a hard drive that stores all of our beliefs.  It helps us to filter what we see and experience, and it likes to categorize our worlds, putting things into nice, neat file cabinets for future reference.  We draw on this file cabinet every time we experience something new. Access to information stored in the subconscious file cabinet is limited once it is stored.

Before the age of 8 years old this file cabinet is wide open, soaking up as much information as it possibly can.  In fact, before the age of 8 every single experience goes directly into that file cabinet, creating our base set of colored glasses that we will wear for the rest of our lives!  Are there any guesses as to the purpose of this knowledge base that creates our filter for the world?  Why do we need it?

Safety is the Key – And the Purpose

Right…..to be safe.  Safety is the function of the subconscious storage of information. Our subconscious stores selected pieces of information even after the age of 8 under certain circumstances. Those selected pieces of information are chosen mostly by the degree of pain and trauma that they cause, for these are the events our subconscious would rather we not repeat. These are the events that could harm us, and, again, it is the job of the subconscious mind to keep us safe. After age 8 we no longer have full access to this part of the mind. Our mind builds a barrier to the subconscious mind to keep the information stored and safe. Hypnosis is one way to bypass this barrier.

Sometimes experiences cause us to relive a similar circumstance to one of those stored subconscious traumas. A person, event, smell, sight or sound which causes this stored information to surface is called a trigger.  Subconscious triggers can be anytime, anywhere or anything that reminds us of an event in our past.  Some triggers can be pleasant, like the smell of mom’s perfume that makes you feel loved.  Subconscious triggers can also be extremely unpleasant, like the smell of mom’s perfume that makes you feel sick and scared.  It all depends upon what we have experienced, and, therefore, stored.

Sub-Conscious Triggers – Below the Conscious Awareness

The most amazing characteristic of subconscious triggers is that they occur so abruptly, and on such a deep level, that most people aren’t even aware of what is happening.  The subconscious is truly “sub,” as in below the surface.  There are no thoughts about this in our conscious mind.  Most people can recognize a trigger by the feeling they get.  The feeling can manifest as anxiety, the need to flee, anger, jealousy, physical pain, a racing heart or any number of other ways, but is not consciously recognized by the thought process.  The feeling is usually a familiar one. Many different triggers may cause the same feeling.

Sometimes when people have experienced a traumatic life, triggers become debilitating. Triggers can cause everything from severe emotional stress, to harsh physical ailments.  They can make us want to numb ourselves with drugs, alcohol, food or other chemically altering substances or activities.  They can cause disharmony in our relationships with family, friends and lovers.  In short, triggers can cause extremes, leading to fight or flight responses, wreaking havoc in our lives.

Saying Goodbye to Our Triggers for Good

The good news is that we can change our filter.  We can get a new prescription, a new color of glasses. It is not necessary to suffer.  We can uncover what has been stored in that file cabinet and change the way we filter our reality.  The gift of seeing the world without judgment, without bias and without fear can belong to anyone who desires it. The gifts of freedom, peace, harmony, love and joy can come through understanding and compassion for ourselves and therefore others.

Hypnosis allows people to safely communicate with the file cabinet that creates their view of the world.  Through this communication change is possible.
